A Well-Honed Solution for Bonding Stones

Honing machines are high-performance systems that define the shape and surface of the interior of cylinders. All their parts, including their abrasive stones, must perform to exact specifications. The stones are held in place and spin inside the cylinder to finish the surface.

With abrasive honing stones, the choice of a good bond optimizes stone performance and cost per part. When used to clean or hone precision cylinders, the honing stones require an adhesive that can withstand the pressures of the torque of the machine’s operation and the extreme temperatures generated.

The Honing-Stone Adhesive Challenge

About six years ago, Crosslink Technology was approached by a customer who had been using our XRD 2148 / XHD 2149 for many years. They were experiencing adhesive failures at high temperatures for a new application with a different cooling process. We took the formula for the XRD 2148 / XHD 2149 adhesive that we had developed for them years ago and refined it in the Crosslink Technology lab.

Using the same chemistry which provides superior heat resistance and bonding performance, we re-developed the system and increased its physical strength and heat resistance. We then took this new system and combined it with the previous product, uniting their complementary strengths.

Shifting the mix ratio shifted the stoichiometry of the product. This increased cross-link density, which resulted in higher thermal resistance. Though this would decrease the adhesion capability, the benefits of a single system solution outweighed this decrease.

Results of the New Honing-Stone Adhesive System

Using the same material but at a 2:1 ratio instead of 1:1, the new ratio doubled the heat deflection temperature (HDT). The hardness also increased from 74 shore D to 82 shore D. With these two qualities combined, the adhesive system provides more strength to the honing stones at higher temperatures.

With the new system, the customer was able to get higher performance while cutting back on unnecessary stock, since they can use one system but at different ratios for different needs.

Today, Crosslink Technology is proud to make its proven solution for bonding honing stones available to honing machine manufacturers all over North America.
